As the celebrated Richmond Symphony approaches their final concert in the Altria Masterworks series, they're pulling out all the stops to ensure it ends with a glamorous bang! Welcoming critically acclaimed American mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves to the stage, the ensemble will conjure the hotblooded passion, soaring romantic duets and arias and flamenco flavour of Biszet's 1874 tragic masterpiece Carmen.
Led by the symphony's fearless music director Steven Smith, the once controversial opera enjoys a non-staged concert format revival for one night only. Set in 1800s Spain, it follows the magnetic gypsy woman Carmen as she casts her spell on all she meets, hopping from one lover to the next. Operating fiercely and independently, her wiles and the times ultimately catch up with her in the form of a disgruntled paramour.
